Goals of the Cyber Tower Site Visit
- To Help those students expand their horizons beyond the academic learning, and explore the IT Business world.
- To create awareness of the required skills and knowledge they need to have in order to join the IT leading companies.
The Site Visit
The batch of 30 second year students, who are members of UoMISS, and following the course Bsc(Hons) Information Systems reached the Cyber Tower at 10 am on Wednesday the 24th of January. The Manager of the VCILT of the University of Mauritius accompanied us for the site visit.
The Companies visited were:

2. Infinity BPO
3. National Computer Board-NCB
4. Infosys
5. ASTEK Mauritius Ltd
Overview of the Business Parks of Mauritius Ltd-BPML
Found on the 1st floor in the “wing B” of the Cyber Tower, Business Parks of Mauritius Ltd, a government-owned ‘Infrastructure Development’ company, was incorporated in March 2001 with a view to spearhead the development of Intelligent Buildings and Business Parks in Mauritius. BPML does the Infrastructure work at Ebène CyberCity and its mission to position Mauritius as a regional centre of excellence for ICT outsourcing.

In order to successfully transfer packetized voice, perform video conferencing and data transfer across the Cyber Tower, 2 STM pipes are used. Each of which has a 15-Mbps connection which periodically transfers information across the whole building. However for controlling packet loss in the STM pipes, BPML makes use of multiplexers.
Moreover, BPML also uses the Ethernet as a broadband technology to meet all IT and communication needs and offers IP VPN services to complement their existing Frame Relay and STMs services.
They also provide 24/7 Access network service support and one stop customer interface for all Telecom services.
The responsible person of the BPML told the students that comprehensive alarm systems are used across the Tower. He then showed them the main Distribution frames and the Optical distribution frames of the Cyber tower found at the BPML office itself.

Overview of the Infinity BPO
Situated on the 6th floor of the Tower, the Infinity BPO assists their clients –who are people from France-throughout the development of their commercial activities in the following fields:
- Management of client relations through decentralized call centers;
- Engineering and advice on the Information Systems;
- Installation of Business Outsourcing Process (B.P.O.)
This company currently has 100 employees who start working at noon, that is, 10:30 pm French time.
The Infinity BPO acts as an intermediate between the French product seller and the population of France. For instance if someone need to sell a particular product he/she will phone Infinity to market his/her product and thereafter Infinity will phone the population of France to sell this product.
The Infinity BPO also consists of a server room which constantly maintain the system at the Infinity so as the service is always operational.
Overview of the National Computer Board-NCB
The NCB hosts the Government portal website i.e. the http://www.gov.mu/ which is control by the server room found at the 5th floor of the Cyber tower in the NCB office.
The main roles of the 10 employees working in the NCB office are to administer and maintain the server. However, in order to access this server, permission from the minister is vital.
Oracle 99 is the software which is used to run the system at the NCB.
Overview of the Infosys
The Infosys was established in Mauritius since 2003 and was founded on July 2, 1981 by seven software professionals: N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekai, N. S. Raghavan, S. Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh and Ashok Arora. The company was incorporated as “Infosys Consultants Pvt Ltd.”, with Raghavan’s house in Matunga, north-central Mumbai as the registered office.
Infosys serves various industries through its vertical business units, such as:

- Vb.net
- J2E development
The Mysore training center which is found in India holds 5000 students and Infosys train them to gain aptitude in analytical skills.
The responsible person at the Infosys stressed upon the qualitative and quantitative knowledge which employees should possess in order to form part of Infosys. He further added that in order to ensure that the student get the professional skills required, the Mysore training center conduct regular trainings and tests.
Overview of ASTEK Mauritius Ltd
The ASTEK group is a leading technology consulting firm. They identify the challenges their customers face, and to support them in finding and implementing innovative technology solutions to improve their business performance.
The officer in charge at the ASTEK told the group of students that the requirements needed for being recruited at their company are:
- Discipline
- Curiosity
- Inventive
- Good communication skills
- Knowledge of programming languages like Java and PHP.

Finally, the students also got the opportunity to enjoy the view of Ebene on the roof of the Tower.

Conclusion
The goals set by the University of Mauritius Information Systems Society behind this innovative Cyber Tower Visits were met. The batch of 30 Students did get a foretaste on the work environment they will work in the near future. Since this visit proved to be fruitful, the UoMISS intents to bring a second batch of students, for another site visit at the Cyber Tower.
