On Tuesday, February 20, the Information Systems Society (ISS) hosted the 2nd edition of UNITECH to commence its 2007 program of educational events. The UNITECH 2007 was held at Paul Octave Auditorium, Reduit from 20- 23 February was a buzz with talk of the latest technology. Branded “Behind the New Technologies “, it showcased world-leading IT products.
The Hon. Etienne Sinatambou, Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunication and Hon. Dharam Gokhool, Minister of Education and Human Resources, launched the Unitech 2007 on the 20th February.
Hosted together with our supporting partners, Cellplus and Micro Data Info, and co-sponsors- Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, Le Matinal, MY T, Leal Communication & Informatics Ltd, Task Informatics Ltd and Courts- the event had for main aim to promote awareness among the Students at both tertiary and secondary levels about developments in the field of Information and communication technologies.
Attendees saw demonstrations from major companies and innovators and test-drove the latest technology. This event served as a great opportunity for students, educational institutes, staffers and public interest advocates to come together, in an atmosphere of technology.
“Unitech is different from Infotech as we not only show the latest IT gadgets but we also want people to be informed about ICT development in Mauritius. We, students, we aim at getting everybody involved in ICT in one way of another. We invited final year students to meet other professionals who are already working in the field to questions that they otherwise cannot find answers to in classrooms.” Said Basant Lallah, President of ISS

The Best Stand Award is judged on the following criteria: attractive, user friendly design; clear information on products; best use of space; welcoming to the visitor; and the presence of knowledgeable, helpful stand personnel.
Micro Data Info won the best supporting team award. But however, we strongly believe that every single exhibitors and particiapants equally contributed to the accolades of the Unitech 2007.
To our great surprise, we, Information Systems Society executive members, were awarded by Micro Data Info for our initiative for organizing the UNITECH 2007.
During the prize giving ceremony, 2 NCC Scholarship awards course were given in order to assist needy students, prizes to the best websites competition participants- 1 group at the secondary level and the other at the tertiary – were also handed. Furthermore, a 128 MB pen drive was also offered to our lucky draw winner.
IS Society will continue to put in the hard yards, by working to remain motivated, by coordinating its efforts and by bringing the university students’ and the young people the latest technologies and services. Throughout this, we wish to have your support and assistance.
We already have particularly dynamic, flexible and sure-footed students in ensuring their willingness to create an information-based society in Mauritius. In the meantime, we will be working very hard to ensure that all students of the university understand our interests and further empower people to the use of ICT to improve their knowledge. Our society believes in a strong future and remains committed to working with it to ensure its long-term viability.
Finally, we thank everyone who has been supporting us throughout the event and who had had their interest in collaborating with us.
