The first weeks of August brings to us one of the most awaiting event for new students, the orientation day. As each year new batch of students taking different courses join the University of Mauritius. The orientation day is whereby the new students get an initiation of what their life as university students would be and how to deal with it. This year the Information Systems Society (ISS) together with the student union’s members guided them to build their awareness of what the life at UOM will be.

Seizing this opportunity ISS launched its first FREE newsletter “LA FRONDE”- sponsored by Cellplus, Compuspeed Ltd, Harel Mallac bureautique and Colour Plus -that was distributed to all the fresheners. (The newsletter can be downloaded from the “Download box ” found on the right side )Through this newsletter the students got the overview of ISS, when it was established and about the dynamic team who is always working in co-operation to bring to the students academic and non- academic activities. Moreover, through the newsletter the students got to read articles written by the executive members of ISS and La Fronde about the life of a student on the campus, different achievements of ISS such as site visit at the cyber tower… and the forthcoming activities.

The student union’s members and the president of ISS talked to the students about what’s awaiting them when their courses will begin, as well as making them aware of their student’s rights and on the various academic and non- academic events on the campus.

The dynamic team of ISS took the initiative to guide the students through the campus, the premises of the university and the lecturers. There were many questions and answers, but gradually the anxiousness of the students about venturing in the unknown were gone and replaced by the excitement of the adventure and discovering new things.

By the end many new friends were made, old memories of our own first orientation day came afresh and even after a long and tiring day everyone had a fun and exiting time. For some it had been a day of new discoveries and for others a day of passing by their knowledge and sharing of experiences. Overall it was a great day!!

ISS Treasure Hunt

July 11, 2007

First prize winner treasure Hunt

The University of Mauritius Information Systems Society has once again proved to be 1 among the most active club on campus and the proof is the fun-filled & fantastic treasure hunt we had. This ride around the campus was full of excitement. Some intelligent teams got it right, others toiled & toiled until they got it. Some turned out to be breathless & opted to rest.

The scavenger hunters were very enthusiastic and some even seemed to be marathon athletes. Now, when almost all the teams seemed to be approaching the treasure, we were quite confused as to who was going to be the winner, as some teams were going about so confidently.

But hey watch out!! A team of 3 girls came out the winners. They broke the challenge & triumphed. The first 3 winning teams won loads of exciting prizes. But the fun doesn’t end here. Even those who lacked behind in the treasure quest did not miss the entertainment. They showered their friends with water. Outing Adventures!

June 22, 2007

The holiday outing went great! 180 students turned up for the outing where 3 buses left campus around 09:30am, and didn’t make it back until 17:30.

Midlands dam

Starting from Midlands Dam, we climbed on it to see the flowing water and the impoundment which is created on the other side.

We then headed to the south-east coast to adventure the reefs, which nearly surrounds Mauritius-Le Souffleur.

After seeing the amazing thundering breakers, caused by the sea rushing up against rocks and cliffs, we went to relish the clam lagoon of Blue Bay.

At Blue Bay, we enjoyed a short cruise on a Glass Bottom Boat where we got and opportunity to view the marine life and feed the fishes.

Some students preferred to walk on the sand and enjoy afternoon sun, while others had fun playing games like the tug of war. It’s only around 16:30 that we got back to the parking area.
