UNITECH 2008

The Information Systems Society (ISS), being one of the most active clubs on the campus, brings you “Unitech 2008”. Owing to the success of the two previous editions held (11,500 visitors in Unitech 2007), we bring you another promising edition of Unitech.

Unitech 2008 will be held from Tuesday 18th to Friday 21^st March 2008 at the Paul Octave Wiehe auditorium.

 

The Opening Ceremony will take place on 18th March 2008 from 1800 to 22 00 and the exhibition will be open to the public over three days from Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st March 2008 as from 09 30 to 16 00.

Unitech 2008 will comprise of the following:

• An Exhibition for exhibitors to showcase their products and services.
• A Job Space, to facilitate recruitment in the ICT Sector
• Technical / Product Demo Conferences
• A Platform for sales of the newest products.

Unitech 2008 is being organized in order to provide information on developments and achievements in the ICT sector in Mauritius as well as create awareness on and spread emerging technologies. Furthermore, the aim of including a Job space in Unitech is to sensitize on career opportunities in the ICT sector.

ISS First edition of Job Fair

“In the middle of difficulty lies an opportunity”

Job fairs are becoming a more common method of entry level recruiting and initial screening. It is the opportunity to reach interviewing the highest possible number of prospects in the shortest possible amount of time. For many students, job fairs provide an opportunity to meet with multiple employers in the same day.

Such was the job fair 2007, organised by the Information Systems Society, ISS, on the 5^th to 8^th September at the auditorium Octave Wiehe.

The job Forum, though organised by IT students, did not target only IT-related companies but others as well. There were about 20 booths in this job space and all most all of them were looking for people for immediate recruitment.

This forum was open not only to UoM students but also to all secondary and other tertiary students.

It was a matchmaking platform between the companies and the students, whereby, Cellplus was our Platinum Sponsor and they distributed FREE STARTER PACKS to all newcomers.

Without also forgetting that, the awarding ceremony for the ESSAY COMPETITION- marked by Mr Kavi Khedo- was also held on the opening, where the winners won MOBILE SETS & STARTER PACKS by Cellplus.

To enhance the atmosphere of the job fair, the MBC was there, with its breath taking stand. It also contained a mini radio studio, whereby, the job fair was being discussed LIVE.

Well many of the attendees at the job fair were “window shoppers” who were just browsing to see what is available. But the fact is that many students have been recruited or have been called to interviews in these companies.

In other words the ISS has been instrumental in helping out the students to open themselves to the job market and building up contacts with the companies

ISS ORIENTATION & FUN DAY

On Friday the 24^th August, as from early morning a huge crowd was gathered on the campus of the University of Mauritius near the cafeteria. What was the reason??? It was Fun day!!! The Information Systems Society had once more organised an extra ordinary activity, a very 1^st event on the campus.

In fact, with the collaboration of our Sponsors- Cellplus, kaira (Mauritius) Pvt. Ltd, Compuspeed Ltd and Harel Mallac bureautique -ISS organised a fun day so as to welcome all the fresheners. For the occasion free starter pack were given to all new comers and ISS members and it’s not just a starter pack but it’s actually a brand new number that was being launched that day!!!

Together with the La Fronde executive members, the ISS executive members worked in cooperation to make the fun day a day not to forget so soon. There were everything present, a great DJ playing great music and animating the event, several games e.g. the latest LAN games, musical chair, tug of war and many more.

The response was just amazing. Many students took part in the games and assisted the competitions and won lots of interesting gifts. There was a lucky draw and the lucky winners got to win loads of gifts.

In the end our efforts didn’t go to waste as the day was a great success and we all had a blast. Hope ISS brings another such occasion again.

ISS FUN DAY: WELCOME TO UNIVERSITY LIFE

Since its existence in 2005, ISS has been organizing activities for students to enjoy campus life. Keeping this objective in mind, ISS brings you “ISS Fun Day”. This event will be held on the campus itself on the 24^th August 2007. This event is being brought about mainly to welcome new comers to the University of Mauritius.

 

Fun-filled activities such as Tug of War, Egg race, Eating competition, latest LAN games, Dart competition and much much more will be held on that day. Winners of those competitions will be getting fabulous prizes from CompuSpeed Ltd and Kaira Pvt Ltd. Furthermore, every new comer will receive a FREE starter pack from Cellplus upon the presentation of receipts, which were given on payment of fees. This will be considered as a proof of being a first year student at the university.

 

ISS has once again proved its willingness to bring some fun in students’ lives on the campus. Apart from academic and career oriented service, here is briefly what ISS can also bring you: some moments of fun and pleasure.

Infotech 2007

 

“INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR AN EMERGING AFRICA”, such was the theme for the great trade show that was organised by the national computer board. Like every time, this event welcomed a wonderful amount of visitors this year as well.

This IT forum, featuring industry displays and demonstrations of emerging information technologies exceeded 100 booths, among which was the stand of UNIVERSITY OF MAURITIUS which was represented by the executive members of ISS.

While other stands such as harel mallac, UTM and others were promoting their institutions, the executives of ISS did not lack behind in doing so. They enhanced the atmosphere of the UoM stand by welcoming loads of visitors.

The aim of the stand of University of Mauritius was especially to exhibit its IT department and courses.

The whole ISS team was there along with a staff member to talk and advice about the courses. The executives showered the warmest welcome to all the visitors and briefed them properly to widen their knowledge about the world class quality education of university.

One of the promoting vectors of our stand was the CCNA course.

This network-oriented course is now open for enrolment to the full time students of UoM and also to the public. This particular course attracted a fabulous number of people of different age groups.

To promote this course on this trade show, a presentation was showed on the 3 LCDs which were arranged in a very sophisticated manner in a pyramid-like mounted structure. And as always the ISS executives tried their best to attract visitors and invited them to watch the presentations, among which were the displays of the IT department, the CITS, and of course that of the ISS.

The most striking point of the Stand was the ESSAY COMPETITION that was launched by ISS. Linked with the theme of infotech, the title was “The transformation of Mauritian people into an ICT intelligent population”. Due to this initiative of the ISS, the interest of many students and young people, aroused. ISS executives gathered the contact details of the interested participants so that a database can used afterwards to keep track of them.

Also the ISS will be organizing a job fair on the first week of September at the auditorium.

As the MBC stand was there, we didn’t lose the opportunity to approach the Radio department. There, we came into contact with the animator, Vikas Gaur, with whom we shared some talks live about the Job fair, on radio.

Another animator, Mr Maistry, the animator of business watch, approached us to video shoot our stand and especially the creative poster of the ISS.

In addition to that, the director of the mbc, Mr Bijaye Madhou, promised us full sponsoring of the job fair. Also the photographer didn’t miss to take the pictures of the ISS executives along the outstanding stand of UoM.

In other words, the ISS has been instrumental in helping to create the world class “Hub” of high performance computing.
